·         Cost based on prices in district towns of North India (1995), assuming spans of 3.6m

·         Costs of fired clay tile roofs are based on kiln based clay tiles with strengths similar to MCR tiles.

ll entrepreneurs who have setup workshops so far have invested their own money. This is an obstacle to growth and dissemination of the technology. Establishing avenues for credit financing of enterprises will be a major breakthrough required for accelerated growth in the number of new MCR enterprises. The most favoured option appears to be leasing of machines to new entrepreneurs to be followed by loans to established enterprises. The most crucial aspect will be creation of mass demand for the Micro Concrete Roofing products. The avenues currently being explored are through involvement of big institutions like cement manufacturers and industry associations. A strategy which integrates promotion of cement and cement products is also amenable to a mass media campaign.

Economics

Economics of MCR tiles are provided in the accompanying Tables. The MCR roofing system is competitive in price with respect to other roofing systems, namely corrugated galvanized iron (CGI). Cement sheets and fired clay tiles. The cost of the roof mainly depends on local availability of wood for understructure, cost of labour and transportation, costs of cladding material. The relation of the selling price of the cladding material is:

MCR     :           Clay Tiles         :           Cement Sheet  :           CGI Sheet
